Tiverton

ACE Tiverton Special School

Charlton Lodge will be an outstanding school for pupils with SEMH needs and for Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC) pupils who fall within the average to high ability range. We will ensure academic and social success for our pupils by maintaining a rigorous but flexible and adaptive approach, securing successful future pathways for all our pupils from Key stages 3 and 4.

Our school will be outstanding from the first day we open, the pupils will never be denied the opportunity to succeed, and we aim to provide the very best, all day, every day. We know that a single day lost in the educational life of a pupil is unacceptable as there will never be another chance to repeat that lost opportunity.

About our school

The school will be a 11-16 (KS3 and KS4) co-educational special free school scheduled to open in September 2019 with a sponsor which demonstrates an excellent track record of sector-specific success

Our school will be outstanding from the first day we open, the pupils will never be denied the opportunity to succeed, and we aim to provide the very best, all day, every day. We know that a single day lost in the educational life of a pupil is unacceptable as there will never be another chance to repeat that lost opportunity.

Located at Charlton Lodge, Tiverton in Devon. Charlton Lodge is a former care home which has been released to the Education Authority as there is an urgently needed SEND provision in the Mid Devon area. This demand for SEND (SEMH and ASC) places is high and increasing as there has been a significant housing growth in the M5 corridor from Exeter and Tiverton.

In the next 15-20 years, it is estimated that there will be an increase of 70,000-80,000 new houses

Statement of provision will specify SEND pupils with an EHCP which cites either Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC) or Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) as their primary need

The learning environment will be an inclusive one in which all of our pupils will be valued, nurtured and treated with dignity and respect, to secure progress across all subject areas and in their personal development

There will be due regard to the SEND Code of Practice 2015 and Part 3 of the Children and Families Act

We will have high expectations for every young person to leave as a confident young adult who is well prepared for the future. We will develop employability, independent living and social skills to fully support the preparation for adulthood for older learners and support them into Post-16

Opportunities and experiences will be provided for every child to develop their personal, social, creative, physical and academic skills via personalised learning using NC frameworks

We will involve our pupils in decision making and problem solving in order to develop appropriate target setting through a person-centred planning approach wherever possible

Total alignment with the Devon County Council vision

A school which will, as required, promote British values as part of pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development

We will ensure there are high levels of parental involvement with excellent school-home communications and we will involve parents/carers in the implementation of the programmes of support

There will be close collaboration with partner establishments in the local family of schools. Our outreach work will improve practice in terms of supporting children with SEMH and ASC needs in the 11 primary schools and one secondary school in Tiverton and then across Devon. We will uphold the close integration and co-operation between all of the Special Schools across Devon and we will work closely with Devon County Council in the strategic planning of the special school places

The school will be a unifying local hub working with other agencies and services to provide a comprehensive package of support for pupils and their parents/carers

Efficient and effective financial management will support the school’s development plan and will promote achievement and personal development for our KS3 and KS4 pupils

We will support sustainability via the school travel plan

The Board of Trustees, Governors and all staff employed at the school will work relentlessly to ensure that every pupil achieves their maximum potential in an environment which is safe, supportive and caring and has exemplary safeguarding standards.
